Mention My Name Memorial Service – remembering lives, sharing grief and finding hope
On 9 September 2026, Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria (CCC) and Grief Care welcomed families, friends and members of the community to St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, for the annual Mention My Name Memorial Service, a special gathering of remembrance, hope and comfort for those affected by suicide and death by misadventure.
Presided over by Bishop Emeritus Terry Brady, the service offered a compassionate space for people to come together in prayer, honour the lives of loved ones and find comfort in the presence of others who understand the unique experience of grief and loss from suicide or misadventure.
At the heart of Mention My Name is a simple but powerful message: every life deserves to be remembered, and every name deserves to be spoken.
For those grieving a death by suicide or misadventure, loss can be especially complex, often accompanied by unanswered questions, isolation and the fear of misunderstanding or judgement. This service recognises these challenges at a compassionate, human level, while encouraging families and friends to remember their loved ones for the lives they lived, the relationships they shared, and the love and memories that endure.
Through prayer, reflection and shared remembrance, this profound and moving service provides an opportunity to acknowledge grief openly, challenge the silence and stigma that can surround suicide and misadventure, and remind those who are bereaved that they are not alone.
Following the service, members of CCC’s Grief Care team offered compassionate support and an opportunity for conversation.
The annual service reflects CCC’s ongoing commitment to supporting individuals and families through grief and bereavement, creating spaces where loss can be acknowledged with dignity, compassion and understanding.
